Medialounge presents recent projects produced collectively by InterSpace, and three individual projects by InterSpace artists. The selected works give an overview of the contemporary media art scene in Bulgaria and the pivotal role of InterSpace in the local cultural context.

Presentations include documentation of previous InterSpace projects, screenings of video art, and current net.art.

Internet projects, selected for the presentation:

"Schizoid Architecture" - 2000- 2002

Net.art project, opened for unlimited number of collaborators that are involved in the creation of a virtual architectural model of shared personal spaces.

Each one creates 360 degrees panorama of his/her interior/private space and places it within the virtual environment.

The idea is to show the place you are connected with, giving individual values to the surrounding objects, which save you from the "other" world and could speak to you "a secret" language" which only you can understand, or could represent your individuality. Thus, one's pictured and made-as-multimedia-environment room is transferred to the net space and becomes one's personal art project.

The panorama placed at the 'schizoid architecture' world is connected with other interiors and thus creates a specific type of communication and experience

"Socializer Chat" - 2001

Net art project, based on a chat client and VRML animation. It is part of the idea for the visualization and mapping of information in the conversations and the interactions on the net and more particularly in the chat channels.
The concept of this project is based on a very simple idea: speaking with each other, exchanging words and ideas people build or destroy something. In the concrete case this is a 3D tower and some specifically chosen words used in the chat window build or destroy this tower.

"Metabolizer" - 1997

The first Bulgarian net art project and one of the first net art projects using VRML.

This is a virtual reality construction-type project in which an image of a author's body can be modeled on the basis of changes of metabolism.
It is like an interactive game where the players are able to modify the body by injecting it with hormones, drugs, proteins, vitamins, and other substances, and all interventions are amassed.

The implicit idea of the visible change is to produce a symbol of people's striving to fight isolation and alienation, and adapt to a changing social reality.

"Urban Cycles" - 2000- 2002

(interactive video installation in public space)

Urban Cycles is a project, which explores the impact of public interactive video installation in different urban sites. It is a collaboration between ten artists selected from Interspace, Sofia (BG) and IDEA, Manchester (UK) who have a sustained interest in the moving image, its intervention in public space and the potential for exchange and interaction between artist and audience using new media technologies.

"MacroVideo" - 2001

If you have passed around the National Palace of Culture (Sofia) during the mid May 2001 you could have seen people, standing in the unusual spring chill and staring at impressive projections. That was the screening of the public video installation "MacroVideo", in which eight young Bulgarian video artists were involved. For a second time, after the interactive
video installation Urban Cycles, the National Palace of Culture hosted a public event using new media.

"It is a research project in progress, started in Jan. 2001, and still in a process of development. I simply collect all possible featured movies, where there are references to Bulgaria, Bulgarian
identity, Bulgarian culture, etc… For me as an artist, living in Bulgaria, this is an attempt to investigate how the moving image industry, as a mass media is dealing with the "OTHER", the "EXOTIC", the "UNKNOWN" cultures, as appears to be The BG keys. The references in the movies are always weird, absurd, and irrelevant to any real facts.
In these movies we can see either distribution of the popular cliches, or fictions, creating from the Bulgarian identity a monstrous, grotesque persona.

The series of color prints is a kind of portrait of Bulgarian character, distributed in international mass consciousness (the audience in the cinema halls, consumer home videos)"

Series of stills from feature movies captured and scaled up, with the subtitles. The size of every still image varies depending of the space it will be exhibited. The series from one movie are arranged in line and printed in one plate. The width of each plate depends on the
sequence of images, included. Movies, stills has been taken by this moment:

"The creation of this project is directly related to my trips and meetings in Great Britain to investigate the media art scene in the country. The choice of places and events to which I go and the people I meet is determined by different subjective and objective reasons, but mainly by my interest as an artist and leader of a media art institution. Apart from the official events and meetings, another formal reason for the trips are also the informal meetings and conversations, mainly in clubs and pubs after the official part. It is these meetings that I intend to broadcast on the Internet, because of their informal atmosphere, in which artists and people working in the area of media arts, discuss their problems and topics related to life, survival and personal motivation.

Without pretending to be thorough, the streaming documentation of my conversations presents a picture of the media art scene, which is biased and critical at the same time, and the conclusions and analyses that remain under the surface of the official activity and the professional ethics. The desire for complete authenticity and the finality of the published information is the reason for the choice of video streaming for this project"

Maria Berova - "Webolution" 2002

Software web project

The fully computer generated web project aims to create an artificial life (a simple form of 'animal'), whose growing and behavior is controlled by users. The interaction is based on climate characteristics of the environment the animal inhabits. Users can choose a place on the Earth from a list with websites provided and depending on the typical climate of chosen site they can explore the changes of "animal" evolution.

Web-based project, combined with an installation in gallery space. The project explores the interrelation "real-virtual" but in shifted roles. It shows how the network affects things in real
life. When reading the text in the web site the visitor realizes that everything is related and has to take responsibility for his actions.
